Inter is a performance from the Connection Series in which the artist collective Schscht seeks connection with the space, with each other, with the exhibited works and with the viewer. The performance consists of intense looking, with Schscht occupying a position at whispering distance from the work. Through intense looking, and no more than that, a new work is distilled from an existing work in an existing context. The performance always adapts to its surroundings.
At Inter, a visual work from the exhibition is fully integrated into the overall image of the performance. Context, spectator and environment play a crucial role here. Looking at visual work is usually the purpose of an exhibition, but by Schscht standing in the personal space of the work gives it an alienating addition, as if the work steps out of its comfort zone and becomes one with Schscht.
Museum rules are not violated because the work is not touched, but the unwritten convention that a spectator is not a physical part of a work of art is crossed. Schscht enters into an intensive relationship with the work by merely looking. This austere addition to the work changes the design of the sculpture and also the spectator’s behaviour. The latter will wonder what there is to see and what he himself does not see and will continue to look for longer than the average 28.63 seconds at the new image created by Schscht’s addition
